Puppy heart surgery gives spaniel new life

HOLLAND, Pa. - Here's a true love story about a once-puny pup who gave away his heart as soon as it was mended.

Buddy, a Springer Spaniel who now weighs 40 pounds, had been suffering - literally - from a bleeding heart and a date with death at an animal shelter. But helping hands and puppy love saw him through surgery and recovery and gave him a dog's life, his new family said.

Buddy was tossed into the shelter when he was 6 months old. His original family had lost its house and he was far from healthy. But a rescue organization, a veterinary worker and his introduction to Hero, a 118-pound mutt that would become his sibling, brought Buddy back to life.

Man allegedly bites off girlfriend's nose

TULSA, Okla. -- A family sitting down to dinner had to call police and an ambulance after a man allegedly bit off the nose of his girlfriend, authorities said.

Jody Bennett came out of a back room of a north Tulsa residence on Thursday with a napkin over her face and said her boyfriend, identified as Greg Hill, had bitten her nose.

Medics responding to the house saw that Bennett's nose had been severed and called police.

"We looked around and tried to find a nose but couldn't find it," Cpl. Larry Edwards, a police spokesman, said. "I think he swallowed it."

Vietnam bans alcohol in karaoke bars

HANOI, Vietnam - Karaoke bars in Vietnam will no longer be allowed to sell or have alcohol on their premises as part of the country's continued campaign against so-called 'social evils,' a government official said Friday.

Under a decree that took effect Thursday, karaoke bars, along with discotheques, will also be required to close down at midnight, said Le Anh Tuyen, director of the Legal Department at the Ministry of Culture and Information.

"The decree will definitely help reduce negative activities in karaoke bars and discotheques," he said.
