It's a sad day in the neighborhood ...

I'll admit, when I'm flipping channels and I happen to see reruns of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," I have mixed feelings. Sometimes I think the show is kind of creepy and weird. But you know what, it's not nearly as creepy and weird as Barney and Teletubbies. But when I was a kid, I loved Mister Rogers. Mister Rogers, Romper Room and The Friendly Giant were the shows I remember most as a kid. They taught me a lot about a lot of things, and helped me grow. I was a pre-Sesame Street kid, so Mister Rogers and Romper Room were pretty much the only educational shows for kids then ... at least that I remember. But the thing about Mister Rogers was that you learned without really knowing you were learning. It was like hanging out at a favorite uncle's house. I just figured it out. Maybe the reason I think the show is creepy and weird now has nothing to do with the show at all. Probably through osmosis, I probably have the feelings that a guy Fred Rogers' age shouldn't be hanging out with children. That's sad. Now that I figured out my feelings, maybe I can go back to all the old feelings I had about him. .... I know I'm just rambling because I think of exactly the right thing to say that would be a fitting tribute to the man. ... May he rest in peace.

I think Bruce Willis did a decent job last night. I could tell he was a little nervous, especially during the Dan Rather interview, but all in all, he wasn't too bad. He'll never replace Dave though.

I'm wondering if Dennis Miller is really pro-war or if his latest series of rants is just a publicity stunt.

I hate when Simon gives constructive criticism and people think he's just being mean. Maybe when all those people (except Corey and the Marine) see the tapes of themselves, they'll realize how much they suck. Then again, maybe not. But they did. And hey, you know you suck if Paula agrees with Simon. Or, at least you should know.

More thoughts on war and peace and ...

To clarify, I said I believed this wouldn't work. I didn't say it wasn't a good idea. Again, I think it won't work because Bush doesn't seem to care what other people think about war.

What's the difference between our weapons of mass destruction and everyone else's weapons of mass destruction? Why can "we" have them, but "they" can't? Some may say because "we" are a civilized country who would use them responsibly. But, I would think other countries look at us and say that "we" are the only country that ever used them. Remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

I like this analogy ... Say you and your friends are 12 years old. You see a 3-year-old with a knife and you believe he shouldn't have it because he could hurt innocent people with it. You don't go and beat up the 3-year-old to take the knife away. You reason with him. Because he's 3, and 3-year-olds are difficult to reason with, it might take a while. But you're bigger, smarter and stronger, so eventually, you will be able to get the knife without anyone getting hurt.

What was the deal with the grammy winners and presenters not be "allowed" to make any anti-war statements? This is still America, isn't it? Freedom of speech, and all that? And why did the vast majority of people at the grammy's go along with it? Surely more people than Sheryl Crow and Fred Durst had something to say.

Peace.

Have you heard about the human shield movement? People are going to Iraq to act as human shields in front of potential bombing targets in the hopes these places won't be bombed if there are innocent people there. If they want to do it, risk their lives that way, more power to 'em. But I couldn't help but laugh at this guy who was quoted in the NY Times. "I think the Iraqi government is potentially putting us in a dangerous position," said a young Australian who said he had decided to leave. ... Uh, what part of "human shield" didn't he understand before he got there?

How could this happen?

I don't understand how doctors in supposedly one of the best transplant hospitals in the country could have allowed this to happen.

The hubby did it

There's no doubt in my mind that Scott Peterson hid his wife away until she had the baby. He killed Laci, took the baby to Mexico and sold it. Case closed.

The "Real" News

I've gotten a couple of e-mails from people asking why, if this blog is called "My Views on the News," I haven't commented on the "real" news. First of all, I didn't know anyone still read this blog and cared enough to send me an e-mail. But thanks. Anyway, I haven't commented on the seemingly impending war with Iraq because, quite frankly, it scares and depresses me. What more is there to say? I agree with this.

But because a couple of you did ask, here's what I think:
1.Bush is being irresponsible, irrational and stupid.
2.The United Nations is worthless. The purpose it serves best is providing fodder for late night talk show hosts.
3.France sucks.
4.No matter what the talking heads say, American troops are not ready for war. How many accidents involving our troops have there been since 9/11? And there's not even an official war yet!
5.Tom Ridge is a disappointment.

Call me cynical, but this won't work. Bush will find a way to get us into war no matter what anyone says or does. He's obsessed.

There you have it, for what it's worth.

Music

About a year ago I was criticized for blogging that Sheryl Crowe's "Tuesday Night Music Club" was an album that was important to me. How can another person judge what's important to someone else? Okay. I like Sheryl Crowe and Patsy Cline. I like Elvis and Eminem. I like The Beatles and Puddle of Mudd. I have very electic tastes in music, movies, well, everything actually. And I'm criticized for that by a person who think music died the day Kurt Cobain did? Something just ain't right there.

American Idol

I guess I can understand Fox's point about dumping Frenchie from American Idol, but I think there's more to it than they're admitting. I think they were afraid Frenchie would win the whole thing, and she's not quite the image they have for an American Idol. She's not a Britney clone. In fact, she's probably the anti-Britney. But she's got more talent in her little finger (I could have used another body part or 2, but that would have been too obvious) that Kelly Clarkson has in her entire body. I would have to bet that Fox is none too happy that Frenchie's get so much attention. Good!

Can't Buy Me Love

Who would have thought Joe Millionaire could restore my faith in human nature? Maybe that's going a bit too far, but it did make me feel good. First, let me say I only watched the last 3 episodes because I thought it would be a dumb show. I started watching because of all the stuff about Sarah and the fetish films. But, even coming into it as late as I did, I could tell she was only in it for the money. I was surprised that Evan, aka Joe, saw that. "She was into to Joe Millionaire, not Evan Marriott," he said. Then there's Zora. I was happily surprised when she said she wanted to "continue the journey." With that said, I'll admit I kind of wanted it to go the other way. I read at mikey's that if the girl "Joe" chose decided to stay with him, she got a million bucks. But if she decided not to say, Fox would tell her "Sorry, if you stayed you could have had a million dollars." I really did want to see Sarah's face #1 when Evan told her he wasn't a millionaire and #2 when Fox told her she could have had a million if she stayed with him. Oh well.

I do think Fox was really cheap in giving them a million dollars to share, though. Couldn't they have sprung for a million each?

Congratulations to Ev and everyone at Pyra Labs. I think it's a good thing. At least he didn't sell to these guys.
